Make an Intervention at the UPR

During the UPR process you can attend the session of the Human Rights Council at which Australia’s UPR outcome documents are considered and adopted.

Before the adoption of the outcome and after Australia and other States have spoken, it is possible to make an intervention.

NGO’s are allocated a total of 20 minutes to take the floor and make a Statement. Statements are usually restricted to a maximum of 2 minutes. But, time permitting, can be longer.

During this period, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations with ECOSOC Status who are acredited to that session of the Human Rights Council can make comments.

Those without ECOSOC Status are unable to attend or make comments.

During the Human Rights Council plenary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations can also present written statements. Written statements have less impact than oral ones but they become official United Nations documents with a symbol.
