Universal Periodic Review

The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a new human rights mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council. It aims to improve the human rights situation of each of the 192 UN Member States. It does this by reviewing the human rights situation of all UN Member States every four years. The outcome of each review is reflected in an ‘outcome report’

Australia is due to report in the UPR in 2011.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can get involved in the UPR process and:

Send a submission to the Office of the High Commissioner before Australia’s review

Lobby members of the Working Group

Make an intervention during the plenary before the adoption of the outcome

Monitor implementation of the UPR recommendations for Australia.
