Gender

Women and men have the right to be treated as equals. Sex discrimination remains a harsh reality for many Indigenous women. Many women continue to experience unfair treatment in the workplace and other spheres of life.

It is illegal in Australia to discriminate on the basis of:

  • your sex,
  • marital status,
  • if you are pregnant or could potentially become pregnant, and
  • being dismissed from employment because of family responsibilities.

These rights are protected in the Sex Discrimination Act 1986  and the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) (Hyperlink to IHRNA page on CEDAW).
