Aims & Objectives

  

IHRNA has the following aims and objectives. For more information about IHRNA and a downloadable copy of the Aims and Objectives please refer to the IHRNA draft Governance Framework.

 

Aims 

  1.  Allow Indigenous human rights advocates access to information that will strengthen Indigenous participation and engagement in human rights issues;

  2.  Facilitate the dissemination of information between agencies working with human rights issues;

  3.  Provide mutual support for human rights workers;

  4.  Facilitate access to expert advice;

  5.  Facilitate the sharing of best practice solutions;

  6.  Promote alliance building opportunities;

  7.  Offer opportunities for personal and professional growth in the field of Indigenous human rights;

 

Objectives

  1. Develop a national network of Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian advocates, including human rights organisations, that are working to sustain their commitment to Indigenous human rights;

  2. develop a critical mass of Indigenous Australian advocates through the network, to support and advocate for Indigenous human rights;

  3. support Indigenous groups and individuals – focussing in particular on young Indigenous adults – to actively participate in human rights forums and related activities through the UN and other national and international Indigenous people’s bodies;

  4. support human rights advocates to ensure that governments at all levels negotiate agreements with Indigenous Australians based on respect, rights and fairness;

  5. support members by developing an expanded pool of active, well-informed and connected Indigenous human rights advocates and encourage mutual support and the exchange of information;

  6. strengthen the effectiveness of the representational and advocacy roles of Indigenous organisations and Indigenous human rights activists in achieving policy and procedural changes at international, national, state and regional levels.
